When you purchase a software license from Gumbo, you receive a permanent authorization code that allows the software to run on the licensed system. For all licenses, the permanent authorization code is specific to the release of our software. For a system wide license, the permanent authorization code is specific to your system serial number and processor group. For a partition only license, the permanent authorization code is specific to your system serial number, partition number, and maximum processor capacity. In practice, permanent means "until you upgrade your current system and one of these items changes". This page describes our upgrade policy.

The following summarizes our upgrade policy.

• When a system is upgraded, a new permanent authorization code may be required.
• To receive a new permanent authorization code, a license must be covered by maintenance services.
• If a license is not currently covered by maintenance services and if maintenance expired in the last 5 years, a one-year renewal is required.
• For a system wide license, a processor group charge usually applies when moving up in processor groups.
• The processor group charge is the difference in current price for the old and new group.
• Processor group changes do not affect partition only licenses.
• For a partition only license, a processor capacity charge applies when increasing the maximum processor capacity of the partition.
• The processor capacity charge is the difference in current price for the old and new capacity.
• Partition processor capacity changes do not affect system wide licenses.
• The software will automatically grant temporary usage on the upgraded system.

When you purchase a software license from Gumbo the first year of maintenance services is included. When maintenance services are about to expire, you will receive a renewal notice.

While a software license from Gumbo is covered by maintenance services, a new permanent authorization code is a "no charge" item. A new permanent authorization code will not be issued for licenses that are not covered by maintenance services.

For a system wide license, you will need a new permanent authorization code when transferring a license to a new system serial number and may need a new permanent authorization code when upgrading the same system to a new processor group. For a partition only license, you will need a new permanent authorization code when transferring a license to a new system serial number. You also will need a new permanent authorization code when transferring a license to a different partition number within the same system or when increasing maximum processor capacity of the licensed partition number.

If you need a new permanent authorization code and the license is not currently covered by maintenance services (but maintenance expired in the last 5 years), you must purchase a one-year renewal. The year commences from the date that an invoice is issued. You are not required to pay for the period that coverage was lapsed.

Processor group changes do not affect partition only licenses.

For system wide licenses, most of our products follow IBM's^® tier pricing scheme which is based on "processor groups". Since each processor group encompasses multiple hardware models and different configurations of specific models, not all "upgrades" involve a change in processor group. For example, upgrading from a model 510 to a model 730 (2068/1506) does not involve a processor group change since both of these machines fall in the P30 processor group. In the case of a model change within a processor group, there is no change in the permanent authorization code required to run our tier based products. The permanent authorization code for a model 510 is the same as that for a model 730 (2068/1506), as long as the serial number remains the same.

When your system upgrade involves a change in processor groups there are two cases, moving up to a larger processor group (for example moving from a P20 to a P30) or moving down to a smaller processor group (for example moving from a P30 to a P20). These cases are handled differently.

When moving up to a larger processor group, you can transfer an existing Gumbo software license to the new processor group by paying a processor group charge and obtaining a new permanent authorization code from us. A processor group charge is calculated as the difference in price between the old and new processor group on the current price sheet for the product.

When moving down to a smaller processor group, you can transfer an existing Gumbo software license to the new machine. Your permanent authorization code for the old larger processor group will also authorize the new smaller processor group. You do not pay a processor group charge.

When moving down to a smaller processor group you face an additional choice. You can continue to maintain the license at its original processor group and avoid a future processor group charge if you move back up to the larger processor group. Alternately, you can reduce the license to the new, smaller, processor group and thus reduce maintenance charges. However if you again move to a larger processor group you will face a processor group charge based on the smaller processor group.

Processor capacity changes do not affect system wide licenses.

For partition only licenses, if you increase the maximum processor capacity within the partition you will need a new permanent authorization code and a processor capacity charge applies. A processor capacity charge is calculated as the difference in price between the old and new maximum processor capacity based on the current price sheet for the product.

Decreasing the maximum processor capacity within a partition requires no action. The same permanent authorization code will also authorize the new smaller capacity and you do not pay a processor capacity charge.

When our products are properly licensed and authorized on a system they will automatically generate and install a temporary authorization code granting a grace period when the system is upgraded. If the serial number remains the same, a 90-day grace period is granted. If the software is copied to a system with a different serial number, a 30-day grace period is granted. This feature provides you time to contact us to get a new permanent authorization code while maintaining uninterrupted usage of the software.

The temporary authorization feature is also useful for hot site authorization during disaster recovery procedures.
